What is Proton VPN?

This is a Virtual Private Network (VPN) from Proton Technologies AG, a company founded in 2014 by a group of scientists who met each other at CERN.

The company is also responsible for ProtonMail, an encrypted email service that gained popularity in the age of Wikileaks exposing major surveillance projects across the world.

In the world of digital privacy, having a VPN is crucial. To stop prying eyes from having easy access to data that you send across the internet. It may as well be spraying a water hose into the public, because it's not hard to tap internet access and grab internet traffic.

While there are already multiple ways to encrypt data on the internet, not all internet traffic is encrypted. There are errors that can happen, system failures, delays in service, or even attacks that turn off the encryption that people take for granted every day.

With Proton VPN, you can enjoy an additional layer of security. This service wraps your internet in a private tunnel. That way, when your internet traffic leaves your system, it looks like a sealed envelop with no clear sender or destination.

That is, no destination that makes sense.

Most people aren't targets of direct spying, but if you are, the prying eyes would simply see that you're going to some random server that makes no sense. These days its clear that you're using a VPN, and there are many other customers.

So many that while the early days of VPN use could rouse some suspicion as someone hiding something, these days there are so many people who use VPNs for many reasons. It's no one's business what you do in the first place, but VPNs are so normal that anyone pressing the subject will have more to answer for than you.

How Do VPNs Work?

Along with encryption, VPNs work by sending your information through a series of servers in different locations--or places that look like different locations. You can even make your connection look like its coming from a different location.

With sophisticated location services, you can access websites and services that are specific to certain parts of the world. Interested in US, UK, Japan, Korea, Germany, Brazil, or other country-limited content?

Interested in games limited to certain regions, such as online games limited to Southeast Asia (SEA), Europe, or North America? A VPN can handle that for you, but keep in mind that there will be a slight delay.

There are services to fight VPN lag, but keep in mind that there will always be some sort of lag. Every extra step is an extra distance no matter what, but premium services can be so good that the human eye won't notice the difference.

Even better, people with terrible internet access may even experience faster network performance. That isn't necessarily making your internet faster; your Internet Service Provider (ISP) may have a lot of errors that cause your data to start and stop for many reasons. A VPN can bypass certain ISP problems and get to the destination.

So the raw internet is faster, but the stupid hoops that your internet goes through can be fixed. This isn't true for everyone; people with stable internet connections will more than likely see slower speeds, but not always slow enough to matter.
